When the British and Dutch governments conspired to ban offshore pirate stations in the mid-1960s, it nearly set off a youth rebellion. Active campaigns to save the stations from certain death by legislation were organized and rabid listeners did all they could to build up popular pressure in opposition to government action.

A part of this effort was the production of "We Love the Pirate Stations," which became known as the theme song to these campaigns. It was reportedly recorded by members of The Ivy League under the name "The Roaring Sixties," and went into heavy rotation in the months before the implementation of the Marine Broadcasting Offences Act of 1967. One of the biggest ship-stations on the scene, Radio Caroline, even ran its own record label and distributed the song to whoever would play it.
